"Be the Hammer, Not the Nail"

Ever since I can remember I was brought up on the phrase to "be the hammer, not the nail". My dad would drill this saying into my head, and I can very well say that it has stuck with me through my life. So far, it has bettered me as a person. In relation to this phrase, I was taught to be independent, and tackle life head on.
Certain things in life will pass you by if you do not take a chance. If you sit around and let certain things in life just pass you by, you may very well miss out on a spectacular moment. "Be the hammer, not the nail" means that in life you need to go after the things you want most and desire. Be the hammer; be strong, ready, and approaching the goal full throttle, go hard at what you want. Not the nail; symbolizing don't let anything stop you or get in the way of you accomplishing what you want. Your dreams are just dreams until you are the hammer, ad go for it and tackle them to make them a reality.
This phrase means so much to me, that I actually have a hammer tattooed on my shoulder, to remind me every day of what I was taught. Never give up, don't lie down and just take things lightly, stand up and fight for what you want. Don't let someone tell you how it is going to be, you make your own life. Being the hammer and not the nail has helped me get where I am today. One particular example, I went after a job that I knew I wanted and was for me. I received all of the necessary certifications to become a Certified Medical Technician and currently wok full time, during the nights. I went after this job, full force, and became employed with one of the best jobs ever. This phrase has also helped me with my schooling career. I wok full time a night and I also attend college full time during the day with intentions to receive my nursing degree. When things get hard, I look at my back, and say to myself, "be the hammer, not the nail". I keep going at it, reaching my dreams until they are fully in my hands.
This phrase means so much to me, and I will continue to live by it for the rest of my life. It has helped me reach certain dreams and aspirations and I believe ad fully live by this "bumper sticker".

  1. I believe this is a good quote to live by. To be the best person you can be you should always be strong and go for what you want. People need to focus on being strong and not letting things get in your way. Wake up everyday with a new begining and a willingness to strive hard.

  2. I like that you have a life motto to live by, and one that is actually useful. I say, Pursue what ever you need to head on, hammer your life a house!

  3. This is a good one. I would have to take your side on this because we all only live once, so dont let anything pass us by, or guilt will always linger on our shoulders.

  6. I appreciate that you wrote about having lived this philosophy, and getting it tatooed. I like it when people have tatoos that actually mean something to them.

  7. i beleive this is an awsome philosophy, but it also ties into one more that confuses me a little. Yes we are told to go for what we want and i beleive that too... but what about good things coming to those who wait?

  10. Don't let people over power you. It is important to stand up for yourself and your beliefs otherwise you will get taken advantage of and never get to express how you feel.

  11. I Would Say Always Be The Hammer
But I Look At This Statement As
    The Hammer Being Agressive
And Being The Nail Is Being More Assertive
And It Doesnt Hurt To Be Assertive Sometimes.

  13. honestly, I think this is a badass post! One of the biggest things that I think divide personalities is if you can speak out for yourself, or if you let others do it for you. Its really cool that you have a quote that you can wear on your shoulder!

  14. Shainia! Hi! I didn't know you are a Certified Medical Technician! Good for you! I definitely agree with your quote... sometimes you just have to go after what you want in life. You shouldn't let opportunities pass you by! See you in class! :)
